Bushfire recovery program
RAV’s Traralgon Centre is working closely with other agencies, local government and individuals in the Gippsland community to support the bushfire recovery program.
Since the devastating fires in January and February 2009, the Centre has:
- employed a full time (fixed term) Bushfire Community Liaison Officer
- attended community recovery workshops and gatherings
- provided free counselling services for individuals, couples and families affected by the fires, with appointments given priority over general counselling appointments
- organised and participated in community and pamper days in towns and communities such as Callignee, Boolarra, Neerim South
- spoken to groups and at community meetings
- organised and sponsored a major Community Recovery Comedy Night for 500 people in Morwell in June 2009
- provided ‘Making Relationships Work’ sessions at Traralgon South, Yinnar, Drouin West, Jindivick and Labertouche
- arranged the highly successful Adolescent Recovery Action Day in Traralgon for the bushfire affected adolescents (aged 12-19)
- provided ‘Kids Recovery Information Sessions’ around trauma issues associated with the bushfires in Baw Baw Shire, South Gippsland Shire and the Latrobe City Council local government areas
- provided information on anxiety management and supports available to local communities in the lead up to the current bushfire period.
The Bushfire Community Liaison Officer is a member of the Gippsland Emergency Recovery Committee’s Community Wellbeing Group (Bushfires 2009), which has representatives from each of the bushfire affected councils in Gippsland, Victoria Police and the Departments of Human Services, Sustainability and Environment and Planning and Community Development.
The Traralgon Centre is committed to assisting the bushfire affected communities in their recovery process and to providing relevant and timely responses to their needs.
