Men and Separation - Navigating the Future

Men and Separation booklet

This booklet has been compiled by counselling staff from Relationship Australia Victoria and MenLine Australia, with the assistance of beyondblue: the national depression initiative. The authors have extensive experience in working with men who are dealing with separation. The booklet contains testimonials from men who have been through separation themselves and from other workers in the field.

The vulnerability of many men who are going through separation and the risk they pose to themselves or others is well recognised. We are well aware of the escalating conflict that occurs between separating couples and the resulting emotional and financial cost to families. This booklet aims to highlight the decisions men face when going through separation and the options they have. While acknowledging the emotional and psychological difficulties of separation, the booklet encourages men to consider their choices, think about the consequences and act in a reasonable and responsible manner, even when their situation may appear very unreasonable.

This edition of the booklet also highlights the risks that separating men, at such a time of great vulnerability, may experience symptoms of depression. Men in these circumstances may find it difficult to cope on their own, may find it hard to do normal activities and to function day-to-day. The booklet explains the signs of depression to be aware of and provides advice about appropriate help and treatment.

This booklet covers topics such as:

  • Separation and men's experience
  • Looking after yourself
  • Fathers and children
  • Relating to your former partner
  • Getting a settlement
  • The future
  • Research about men and separation
  • Where to get further assistance.
