Multicultural programs

The diversity of Shepparton has created an opportunity for our centre staff to work closely with an increasingly diverse local community. The centre has been involved in many projects and partnerships particularly focusing on new-ly arrived migrants and connecting them with the broader community.

Current programs

People Talking – Expression through Creativity
Shepparton Centre runs the program “People Talking – Expression through Creativity” that provides an opportunity for newly-arrived migrants to connect with people from the broader community through creative activities, enabling the sharing of stories and experiences.

Past programs

The Shepparton Centre celebrated Harmony Day, playing a key role in several community events. A Taste of Harmony morning tea saw 150 local residents take to SPC Ardmona Kidstown adventure playground, with free train rides, a fashion parade, guest speakers and children’s activities.

Officiated by City of Greater Shepparton and supported by the Victorian Multicultural Commission, the event saw a range of agencies and people from more than 20 cultures come together to recognise the years of migration and Aboriginal history of the region. Visitors were encouraged to contribute to a RAV art banner, as well as place their mark under a flag delineating their country of origin.

The centre also participated in a local Harmony Fiesta, hosting an information stall in the Maude Street Mall on Monday 21 March.  The afternoon gathering included multicultural performances, community stalls and free pizza and encouraged participants to learn about and celebrate the cultural diversity of the region.
