Past programs

Assisting Somali Children Through School
A series of forums to assist Somali families with school preparation, ages and stages of development.

Workshop for Somali women
Greensborough FRC facilitated a meeting with the Somali Women’s Group as part of its ongoing program to build cultural connections and enhance intercultural understanding in the Somali community.
Issues that emerged included:
• the need for parents to build strong self-esteem in their children
• parents need more information and assistance to know how the education system works or what assistance the children may have to access
• discrimination occurs when Somali children are separated from the mainstream children because of race or religion
• pressure on children as they are often the ones guiding the parents and acting as interpreters
• relationships between parents and children need to be based on support, encouragement and openness where children are able to explore the challenges they face with their parents.

Support for Somali Elders
The centre ran a number of workshops and meetings to educate and support Somali Elders, to utilise support systems that are available to them in the northern region

Refugee Week Celebration
The centre organised a refugee week celebration in partnership with Whittlesea Community Connection and Whittlesea City Council. More than 400 local people from different cultural backgrounds attended this colourful celebration.
There was regional music from different groups such as Kurdish, Macedonia, Burundian. Sierra Leone, Liberia, Vietnamese and Sudanese, as well as food shared from these different cultures.

Everyone Belongs Harmony Day 2011
In partnership with the African Resource Centre and supported by the Victorian Multicultural Commission, the centre celebrated Harmony Day on Sunday 27 March. The Harmony Day Cup football game and assorted other activities were held at Merrilands Community Centre in Reservoir. This involved members of a number of African communities; there was also some Aboriginal dancing and foods from both communities.

The Centre is managed by a consortium involving Relationships Australia (Victoria) as the lead, and partners Berry Street Victoria and Centacare Catholic Family Services.
